Moments of Randomness

Laughter is the shortest distance between two people. ~ Victor Borge
At the height of laughter, the universe is flung into a kaleidoscope of new possibilities. ~ Jean Houston
Imagine feeling no pressure, no stress, no sorrow, no anger.  Imagine feeling free, joyful, giddy and hopeful.  Do you remember the last time you felt this way, even for a single moment?

As I drove in to the office this morning I thought about the impact of randomness in my life.  Randomness brings moments of pure, unadulterated joy into what may otherwise be a difficult day or situation.  Randomness takes me back to my childhood when nothing mattered but the moment.  There were no deadlines; no obligations.  There were no pressures or stresses. There were swings and slides and merry-go-rounds.  There were barefoot walks in the damp grass and toes dangling in the water while I fished.

That may sound simplistic and silly but isn’t that what joy is?

Before you discount what I’m saying, consider a laughing baby. It starts as a giggle, maybe just a single “heh”.  Heh is infectious and multiplies rapidly. As it spreads,  laughter starts to take over, infusing particles of joy in every fiber of his being.   Babies laugh with every single part of themselves: their eyes, their shoulders, their bellies, their legs.  The laughter consumes them and continues until they are nearly exhausted from the purest form of joy: silliness for silliness sake.

When was the last time you experienced random silliness?

I challenge you to take a few minutes out of today to recall your purest moments of joy – those random moments of simple pleasure that marked days of far less responsibility than weighs you down now.  Walk barefoot in the grass.  Play in a puddle in the rain.  Dance in your living room with your spouse.  See how high you can go on the swings or how fast you can get down the slide.   Whatever it is, do it fully, taking in the freedom and joy you feel as the cares wash away.

Let the moment refresh you.  Let it remind you.  And then repeat often.

We now return you to the Geeks in Charge.
