Mr. Rollback, known in real life as Darrell Owens is a local Wal-Mart associate working in the Midlothian Wal-Mart on Hull Street Road. Imagine my surprise this morning when I lost my Geek Hubby in Wally World, only to find him cheesing it up with Darrell. Darrell was busy restocking an endcap in the grocery section of the store when James said, “Hey wait…my wife was right! You DO work here!”

We spent a few minutes speaking with Darrell about his experience and about his plans for the future. He has been on quite the whirlwind tour, taking his first flight ever last month. He has spent time in Nashville and Bentonville and will be traveling to New Orleans soon. All this and still pulling hours here on Hull Street.

He’s as real as real can get. He’s a regular guy, a working class American, with hopes and dreams just like everyone else. He’s humble. He’s authentic. And he’ll shake your hand and help you out just like you would hope he would.

Darrell is making some good money in the nationally broadcast commercials, but he’s very matter of fact about it. He said he’s saving to buy his first house. His hope is that he will be able to pay for the house in full, but if not, have a very small house payment and then put money away, “just in case”. He also said that his momma is proud of him, which was also a very cool thing to hear.

Wal-Mart hit it out of the park with this one. Their selection of Darrell as the face of WalMart works because he is who you see on TV. He isn’t an actor. He isn’t some Hollywood model. He’s the real deal. He’s helpful, polite, and always smiling. What more can you ask for in a brand image? Wal-Mart wants to be the place for “every man” and with Darrell fronting their advertising they get that and more.

If you’re in Chesterfield County and happen to be in Wal-Mart, say hello to Darrell. You’ll see what I mean.
