How in the world did I miss this?
Spike Jonze is putting the finishing touches on the movie adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s truly magical and wonderful Caldecott Award winning book, Where the Wild Things Are. It has been a long time coming, and there were times when it looked like the movie would never make it to release.
As far as I’m concerned, Where the Wild Things Are is the best children’s book…EVER. Maurice Sendak’s illustrations are nothing short of brilliant. Even now, years after the boys are all too old to care about something like this, it is easily quotable by everyone in the OGL household. No joke!
Everything I have read today makes me even more impatient to see this movie. According to Chud.com,
Try as I might, I can’t verbalize how I felt about the trailer beyond the most grandiose superlatives: ‘beautiful’ and ‘gorgeous’ and ‘breathtaking’, making me sound like Pete Hammond. The environments in particular (there’s a sequence of cutting between 4 shots of Max running through different environments that is absolutely magical) are a work of incredible vision, especially in light of the production methods Spike opted for. It does feel like a ‘kids movie’ (not pejorative): the trailer repeatedly made me about eight years old, over and over again. Unless I’m an idiot, and you’ll see yourself in a week or two, the finalized monsters are some kind of incredible technical achievement.
I did a search today to try to find an early release or leak of the trailer. The powers that be at Warner Brothers have forced every site that had a copy to remove it. If anyone out there can send me a copy of it I would be forever indebited. The good news is that the trailer will be seen by audiences of Monsters vs. Aliens which gives me a(nother) reason to go see that movie.
In the mean time, check out this test footage and try to be patient until October 2009!
